Sacred Smoke – The Story, Benefits, and Reforestation of Palo Santo

In a time when so many are searching for grounding, clarity, and connection, a sacred tree from the dry forests of South America is quietly offering its ancient support to those who listen. This is the story of Palo Santo.

The Call of a Dream

Dante Bolcato, an Italian psychotherapist turned alchemist, once had a dream so vivid and powerful that it shifted the course of his life. In this dream, he saw himself discovering a plant that would help bring healing to humanity. Following only his intuition, he travelled to Ecuador — and deep in the coastal forests, he came across a grove of wild Palo Santo trees. In that moment, he knew he had found the medicine he'd seen in his dream.

This was not just a personal revelation. It was the beginning of a deep, ethical project: reforesting and regenerating the native Palo Santo ecosystem. Dante founded a holistic initiative based on reciprocity — one that respects the slow rhythm of nature, protects the natural habitat, and only uses wood that has fallen naturally.

You can read more about Dante’s story and his approach to sacred plant work in his book, Sacred Smoke. Read more about the book here.

What Is Palo Santo?

Palo Santo ("Holy Wood") is a mystical tree native to Ecuador and Peru, traditionally used by Indigenous peoples for energetic cleansing, spiritual protection, and connection to the unseen. When burned, its resin-rich heartwood releases a soft, citrusy, grounding aroma — said to clear stagnant energy, lift the mood, and anchor the spirit.

Benefits of Palo Santo

  • Energetic Cleansing: Used like sage, Palo Santo smoke helps clear negative energy and create a peaceful space for ceremony, meditation or sleep.
  • Natural Mood Booster: The essential oils in Palo Santo have uplifting, calming properties that may reduce stress and anxiety.
  • Insect Repellent: Its aroma naturally repels insects, making it perfect for evening outdoor rituals.
  • Anti-inflammatory Properties: Palo Santo has been used in traditional medicine to reduce inflammation and support immune health.

Our Source: Ethical and Regenerative

At Pachakuti, we source our Palo Santo directly from Dante's reforestation project. Every stick we offer comes from naturally fallen trees, lovingly collected by hand and dried for years to develop their full aroma and healing potential. No trees are ever cut, and each purchase supports forest regeneration and local communities.
