Discovering Ecuador's Hidden Treasures: Guayusa, Dragon's Blood and Beyond
When many people think of Ecuador, they think of cacao. And rightly so as Ecuador is
home to Arriba Nacional cacao, one of the world's most celebrated heirloom cacao varieties and the foundation of some truly exceptional chocolate and ceremonial cacao products. Yet spending time in Ecuador quickly reveals that cacao is only part of the story. Beyond the cacao farms and chocolate makers lies an extraordinary collection of natural products that rarely make it beyond South America. Products that have been valued locally for generations but remain largely unknown to consumers in the UK. From guayusa tea and Dragon's Blood resin to rare stingless bee honey and specialty
Amazonian coffee, Ecuador is home to a wealth of remarkable ingredients that deserve far greater recognition.
A Country Rich in Biodiversity
Despite being one of South America's smaller countries, Ecuador is recognised as one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. Within a relatively small area, you'll find Amazon rainforest, cloud forest, Andean mountains and Pacific coastline. This incredible variety of ecosystems creates ideal conditions for thousands of unique plant and animal species. It’s also one of the reasons Ecuador produces such distinctive agricultural products. While countries often become known for a single export, Ecuador's natural diversity has created a much broader story. One that stretches far beyond cacao.
Guayusa: The Night Watchman
Long before energy drinks and speciality coffee became fashionable, families throughout the Ecuadorian Amazon were gathering before sunrise to drink Guayusa. Made from the leaves of the Ilex guayusa tree, this traditional Amazonian tea has been enjoyed for centuries and remains an important part of daily life in many indigenous communities. Today, guayusa is becoming increasingly popular outside Ecuador as people search for alternatives to coffee and traditional tea. Its smooth flavour, natural caffeine content and fascinating cultural heritage have helped it develop a loyal following among those interested in natural wellness products and traditional botanical ingredients. Yet despite its growing popularity, guayusa remains one of Ecuador's best-kept secrets.
Dragon's Blood: The Amazon's Most Fascinating Resin
Few products attract as much curiosity as Dragon's Blood. Collected sustainably from the Croton lechleri tree, this deep red resin has been used throughout the Amazon for generations and remains one of the rainforest's most recognisable botanical products. The first time you see it, it's immediately obvious why it earned its name. The resin emerges from the tree as a vivid crimson liquid unlike almost anything else found in nature. For centuries, indigenous communities throughout Ecuador and Peru have valued Dragon's Blood and incorporated it into traditional practices. Stories and traditional uses have been passed down through generations, contributing to its enduring reputation across the Amazon region. Today, Dragon's Blood continues to attract interest from people fascinated by traditional botanicals and the remarkable biodiversity of the rainforest.
HASA: The Story of Ecuador's Stingless Bees
Perhaps the most surprising discovery for many visitors is Ecuador's stingless bees. Unlike the honey bees familiar throughout Europe, stingless bees are native pollinators that play a crucial role in maintaining rainforest biodiversity. These remarkable insects produce only small quantities of honey each year, making their honey naturally rare and highly prized. Projects such as HASA (Hospital de Abejas Sin Aguijón) are helping protect native stingless bee populations while supporting sustainable honey production and conservation efforts throughout Ecuador. The result is a honey unlike anything found on supermarket shelves. Distinctive, limited in quantity and directly connected to one of the Amazon's most important ecological stories.
Witoca: Specialty Coffee from the Amazon
Coffee may not be the first product associated with Ecuador, but that is beginning to change. Within the Sumaco Biosphere Reserve, farming communities are producing exceptional Fine Robusta coffee through traditional Chakra agroforestry systems. Unlike intensive monoculture plantations, these systems integrate coffee production into diverse forest environments, supporting biodiversity while producing distinctive and complex flavour profiles. The result is a new generation of Amazonian specialty coffee that is challenging long-held assumptions about what robusta coffee can be.
Looking Beyond the Familiar
At Pachakuti, ceremonial cacao remains at the heart of what we do. But one of the most rewarding aspects of working closely with partners in Ecuador has been discovering the wider story behind the country's extraordinary natural products. Products such as Guayusa, Dragon's Blood, stingless bee honey and Amazonian coffee are not simply ingredients. They represent landscapes, traditions, communities and ecosystems that have evolved over generations. In an increasingly globalised world, truly distinctive products are becoming harder to find. Ecuador remains one of the few places where they continue to thrive. And for those willing to look beyond the familiar, there is still a great deal left to discover.
