Palo Santo means holy wood. It comes from the Bursera graveolens tree, a relative of frankincense native to Ecuador’s dry forests, and has been burned for its aroma across South America for generations.

Only naturally fallen branches are collected, never living trees. They are left on the forest floor for at least three years, letting the natural oils mature into the sweet, resinous scent Palo Santo is known for.

  • Light the tip at a downward angle, then blow out the flame so the wood smoulders.
  • Move it gently through the air and rest it in a heatproof dish.
  • Never leave burning wood unattended, and ventilate the room.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Palo Santo has faced pressure from overharvesting and the loss of its native dry-forest habitat, making responsible sourcing increasingly important. Our Palo Santo takes a different approach: only naturally fallen wood is collected as part of a reforestation project led by Dante Bolcato, the ‘Palo Santo Alchemist’.

Hold the stick at a downward angle and light the tip. It can take up to 45 seconds to catch. Let it burn for a few seconds, then blow out the flame so the wood smoulders and releases its fragrant smoke. Move it gently through the air, and rest it in a heatproof dish when you’re done.
